Iran Attacks US Bases in Qatar

Iran Attacks US Bases in Qatar: On June 23, 2025, Iran launched a missile attack on the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest U.S. military facility in the Middle East, in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites the previous day.

The attack, codenamed Operation Annunciation of Victory by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), involved 19 short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, with Qatar’s advanced air defense systems intercepting all but one, which caused minimal damage and no casualties.

Iran provided advance notice to both Qatar and the U.S., minimizing the risk of loss of life, and emphasized that the strike was not intended to harm Qatar, a nation with which it maintains friendly relations.

The attack sparked widespread concern in Qatar, with explosions and interceptor missiles lighting up the skies over Doha, prompting temporary airspace closures and shelter-in-place orders for U.S. and U.K. citizens.

Qatar condemned the strike as a violation of its sovereignty, with its Foreign Ministry reserving the right to respond proportionally.

President Donald Trump described the attack as “very weak” and thanked Iran for the prior warning, suggesting it could pave the way for peace.

The incident, part of the broader 12-day Iran-Israel conflict, heightened fears of regional escalation, though a ceasefire was announced shortly after, brokered by Qatar.
